                                       Brockton, Massachusetts   Regular School Committee Meeting                       June 7, 2022

                                       The Regular Meeting of the Brockton School Committee was held this evening in the George M. Romm Little Theatre at Brockton High School, at seven o'clock.  These minutes contain a summary of the meeting and list items that were under discussion.

    

                                       Present:  Ms. Asack, Vice-Chair, Ms. Ehlers, Mr. Homer, Ms. Rivas Mendes,

                                                        Mr. Rodrigues, Ms. Sullivan, Mr. Sullivan

                                      

                                       Absent:  Mayor Sullivan, Chair (Arrived Later)

 

                                       Also Present:  Superintendent Thomas, Interim Deputy Superintendent Szachowicz,

                                                                         Executive Team Members, Ms. Kim Gibson, BEA President   

 

Ms. Asack, Vice-Chair, called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m.

                                      

                                       Ms. Asack, Vice-Chair, took a roll call to establish a quorum that was followed by the salute to the flag.

Mayor Sullivan, Chair – Arrived Later

                                        

Ms. Asack mentioned that Mayor Sullivan was unable to attend tonight’s meeting due to City Council Budget Hearings at City Hall.

 

Ms. Asack announced that the School Committee meeting would be an abbreviated session. Members will move to the auditorium for the Student Recognition Ceremony, returning to the Little Theatre following the presentation of awards/certificates.

 

   Hearing of Visitors     There were no hearing of visitors.

 

                                        Ms. Asack asked for a motion to suspend the School Committee meeting with the understanding that the meeting would reconvene after the Student Recognition Ceremony.

Ms. Ehlers moved to suspend the School Committee meeting with the understanding that the meeting would reconvene after the Student Recognition Ceremony, the motion was seconded by Mr. Sullivan.

Voted:  to approve the motion, unanimously.

 

                                        Mayor Sullivan called the June 7, 2022 Brockton School Committee back into session and asked for a motion.

Mr. Sullivan motioned to reconvene the Brockton School Committee back in session, seconded by Ms. Sullivan.

Voted:  to approve the motion, unanimously.

 

                                        The School Committee meeting reconvened in the Little Theatre at 7:53 p.m.

 

                                        Mayor Sullivan explained, that as Mayor he is required to open the City Council Budget Hearing, and thanked Ms. Asack for stepping in at the beginning of the School Committee meeting

.

 

     Consent Agenda       Mayor Sullivan explained the purpose of the Consent Agenda, read the items aloud and asked members for any requests to remove items for further discussion.  No items were removed for discussion.

 

Ms. Sullivan made a motion to approve the Consent Agenda, seconded by Mr. Homer.

Voted:  to approve the motion, unanimously.

    Superintendent’s        

         Report                     SY 2022-2023 Request/Calendar Change (April, Elementary School-Parent Conference)

                                          Superintendent Thomas discussed the SY2022-2023 District Calendar change.  The April, Elementary School-Parent Conference would change from April 13th  & April 14th to April 27th & April 28th .

Mr. Sullivan motioned to approve the April, Elementary School-Parent Conference to April 27th & April 28th, 2022, seconded by Ms. Sullivan.

Voted:  to approve the motion, unanimously.

                                          Approval of the Brockton Public Schools Organization Chart

                                          Superintendent Thomas discussed the Brockton Public Schools Organization Chart that consists of updates for the Central Administration Staff effective July 1, 2022 for the 2022/2023 school year.

Mr. Sullivan motioned to approve the Brockton Public Schools Organization Chart effective July 1, 2022, seconded by Mr. Rodrigues.

Voted:  to approve the motion, unanimously.

Appointment of the District Deputy Superintendent(s)

                                          Superintendent Thomas discussed his recommendations of candidates for the District Deputy Superintendent(s), District Deputy of Teaching and Learning, Ms. Sharon Wolder and Deputy Superintendent of Operations, Dr. James Cobbs.  

 

Mr. Sullivan motioned to approve the appointment of District Deputy Superintendent, Ms. Sharon Wolder, seconded by Ms. Rivas Mendes.

Voted:  to approve the motion, unanimously.

Mr. Sullivan motioned to approve the appointment of Deputy Superintendent of Operations, Dr. James Cobbs, seconded by Ms. Rivas Mendes.

Voted:  to approve the motion, unanimously.           

Student Recognition Awards (Nelson Auditorium)

Superintendent Thomas acknowledged the Student Recognitions Award ceremony held earlier this evening, thanking teachers, administration and support staff at schools for helping students achieve and reach their goals.  Superintendent Thomas also acknowledged students and their families for their continued support and success.  He thanked the School Committee members for supporting the extra-curricular, in-school and academic activities available to our students.   

 

Ms. Sullivan acknowledged the positive feedback and well-structured timing of the Graduation Ceremonies held at Brockton High School this Friday and Saturday.

Ms. Sullivan motioned to adjourn, seconded by Ms. Rivas Mendes.
