Organizational Meeting
January 7, 2020
The Organizational Meeting of the Brockton School Committee was held this evening in the George M. Romm Little Theatre at Brockton High School, at seven o'clock. These minutes contain a summary of the meeting and list items that were under discussion.
Present: Mayor Sullivan, Ms. Asack, Mr. D'Agostino, Ms. Mendes, Mr. Rodrigues,
Ms. Sullivan, Mr. Sullivan, Superintendent Thomas
Absent: Mr. Minichiello, Vice-Chair
Mayor Sullivan called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m., followed by a salute to the flag.
He explained that tonight's meeting would include the election of officers and other organizational school committee business as required.
Mayor Sullivan acknowledged Brockton City Council President Ms. Shirley Asack, BEA President Ms. Kim Gibson, congratulations to all school committee members, he also thanked Superintendent Michael Thomas and Ms. Malinda Campbell Executive Assistant to the Superintendent.
Hearing of Visitors None
Election of The Superintendent of Schools serves as Secretary of the School Committee.
Secretary
Mr. Sullivan moved to recommended Superintendent Michael P. Thomas to
serve as Secretary of the Brockton School Committee in 2020, Ms. Asack seconded
the motion.
Voted: to adopt the recommendation, unanimous.
Recognition of Postponed due to the absence of the Vice-Chair.
Outgoing Vice-Chair
Mr. Thomas J. Minichiello, Jr., served as Vice-Chair of the School Committee during
the 2019 calendar year, making this his tenth consecutive year serving in this position.
Mayor Sullivan, Superintendent Thomas and School Committee members acknowledged the dedication and hard work Mr. Minichiello has put in the past ten years, serving with dignity and respect.
Mr. Minichiello will be presented his plaque at the next school committee meeting.
Election of 2020 The Vice-Chair presides in the absence of the Chair, or whenever the Chair
Vice-Chair temporarily vacates the chair.
Mr. Sullivan moved to recommend Mr. D’Agostino serve as Vice-Chair of the Brockton School Committee, Ms. Asack seconded the motion.
Voted: to adopt the recommendation, unanimous.
Mayor Sullivan, Superintendent Thomas and School Committee members congratulated
Mr. D’Agostino on his position of Vice-Chair.
Mr. D’Agostino thanked School Committee members, his wife Meredith and son Evan for their continued support. He also thanked Mr. Minichiello for being a great mentor, the knowledge and experience he has learned from him.
Election of CSAB The Bylaws of the Community School Advisory Board provide for the election of
SC Members two (2) school committee members to serve on the board for a one-year term.
Mr. D’Agostino moved to recommend Ms. Sullivan serve on the Community School Advisory Board for a one-year term, Ms. Asack seconded the motion.
Voted: to adopt the recommendation, unanimous.
Ms. Asack moved to recommend Ms. Mendes serve on the Community School Advisory Board for a one-year term, Mr. D’Agostino seconded the motion.
Voted: to adopt the recommendation, unanimous.
Approval of Rules The Rules and Orders of the School Committee are subject to annual ratification.

Mr. Sullivan moved to adopt the Rules and Orders for 2020 as presented;
Ms. Sullivan seconded the motion.
Voted: to adopt the Rules and Orders as presented, unanimous.
Appointment of A list of the 2020 subcommittee assignments were presented as stated in the written
2020 Subcommittees document.
Mr. Sullivan moved to accept notification of the 2020 Subcommittee Assignments as stated in the written document, the motion was seconded by Ms. Sullivan.
Voted: to accept notification, unanimous.
Consent Agenda Mayor Sullivan explained the purpose of the Consent Agenda and asked members for any requests to remove items for further discussion. Mr. Sullivan asked to remove Item C, Approval of Overnight, Out-of-State Trip: Empower Yourself to San Antonio, TX, seconded by Ms. Sullivan.
Mr. Sullivan asked for the number of students and chaperones that will attend this trip. Superintendent Thomas replied 18 students and 3 chaperones along with Mr. Cedric Turner. School Committee requested that he attend the next school committee meeting to present information and provide details of this trip.
Mr. Sullivan moved to approve Item C, Approval of Overnight, Out-of-State Trip: Empower Yourself to San Antonio, TX, seconded by Ms. Sullivan.
Voted: to adopt the recommendation, unanimous.
Mr. Sullivan moved the Superintendent's recommendation to approve the remaining Consent Agenda items, seconded by Mr. D’Agostino.

Voted: to adopt the recommendation, unanimous.
Superintendent's Superintendent Thomas welcomed Mayor Sullivan, newly elected school committee
Report members Ms. Cynthia Mendes/ Ward 2 and Mr. Tony Rodrigues/ Ward 4 and said that he looks forward to working together.
Student Report
Superintendent Thomas thanked student representative Georgina Younes for making these meeting a priority and invited her to give her report.
Georgina reported on behalf of the student body and herself at Brockton high that they would like to extend their best wishes to the newly inaugurated Mayor and School Committee members and wished a happy new year to all. School is back in session after the holiday break. She thanked Bertucci's and Mayor Moises Rodrigues for donating to the class of 2021’s holiday raffle in order raise money for the junior prom, which is April 10th at Lombardo’s. The Brockton High School bands and choirs performed for the Annual Holiday concert in honor of our music director Mr. Macrina who is retiring at the end of the school year. Band alumni came back to pay tribute to him. Recently 13 Brockton High students were selected to have their artwork on display at the emerging Young artists exhibition at UMass Dartmouth. Winter sports have commenced and many of teams have begun competing she will keep everyone updated as the season progresses. She thanked everyone again for all your support.
