Brockton, Massachusetts School Choice Public Hearing May 16, 2023
A Public Hearing on School Choice was held on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at 6:45 p.m.
Present: Ms. Ehlers, Vice-Chair; Ms. Asack, Mr. Homer, Mr. Rodrigues, Ms. Sullivan, Mr. Sullivan
Also Present: Superintendent Thomas, Cabinet Members, Ms. Kim Gibson, BEA President
Absent: Ms. Rivas-Mendes

The Public Hearing on School Choice was called to order at 6:45 p.m. by Ms. Ehlers, Vice-Chair, reading the following information for the record.
“Good evening, and welcome to the Public Hearing on School Choice. According to MGL Ch. 76, Section 12B as amended by the Education Reform Act of 1993 and subsequent legislation, the law states that school committees are required to admit students from other districts under the School Choice program, unless there is a vote to withdraw from the program by June 1st of each year, and prior to such a vote, there must be a public hearing on the issue of whether to participate in School Choice.”
Ms. Ehlers, Vice-Chair took a roll call vote to establish a quorum.

Ms. Ehlers opened the meeting to members of the public who would like to speak on the matter of School Choice. There were no visitors.
Ms. Ehlers opened the floor to the committee for discussion.
Superintendent Thomas gave a brief review of the past several years of School Choice in Brockton Public Schools saying that participation has remained consistent. The Committee voted last year in favor to participate in School Choice and accepted up to fifty (50) seats for Brockton High School, ten (10) students in the Edison Academy, and up to six (6) 8th grade students. We receive 100% of Chapter 70 funding.
Ms. Ehlers asked if there was a member of the public that would like to speak on the matter of School Choice. There were none.
Ms. Ehlers closed the hearing.
Seeing no further business,
Mr. Homer motioned to adjourn, seconded by Ms. Asack.
The motion carried.
The Public Hearing adjourned at 6:46 p.m.
