Brockton, Massachusetts Organizational Meeting January 3, 2023
The Organizational Meeting of the Brockton School Committee was held this evening in the George M. Romm Little Theatre at Brockton High School, at seven o'clock. These minutes contain a summary of the meeting and list items that were under discussion.
Present: Mayor Sullivan, Ms. Asack, Ms. Ehlers, Mr. Homer, Ms. Rivas Mendes,
Mr. Rodrigues, Ms. Sullivan, Mr. Sullivan.
Also Present: Superintendent Thomas, BEA President, Ms. Kim Gibson.
Mayor Sullivan called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. He explained that tonight's meeting would include the election of officers and other organizational school committee business as required.
Mayor Sullivan read the following information for the record, followed by a salute to the flag.

Mayor Sullivan asked for a moment of silence, the City of Brockton lost two dedicated employees, Officer Sean Besarick of the Brockton Police Department and Ms. Allison “Ally” Kerr Cashin of the IT Department. “Our thoughts and prayers go to the Besarick and Cashin Family. May they rest in peace.”
Mayor Sullivan took a roll call to establish a quorum.

Establishing of Officers
Election of Mayor Sullivan opened the floor for nominations for Secretary of the School Committee.
Secretary
Ms. Asack motioned to nominate Superintendent Michael Thomas to serve as Secretary of the Brockton School Committee, seconded by Mr. Rodrigues.
Voted: to adopt the recommendation, unanimously.
Election of 2023 Mayor Sullivan explained the responsibilities of the School Committee Vice-chair then opened the floor
Vice-Chair for nominations for the Vice-Chair.
Mr. Sullivan motioned to nominate Ms. Ehlers for the position of Vice-Chair Chair of the School
Committee for the 2023 calendar year, the nomination was seconded by Ms. Sullivan.
Ms. Rivas Mendes nominated Ms. Asack for the position of Vice-Chair of the School Committee for the 2023 calendar, the nomination was seconded by Mr. Homer.
There being no further nominations, Mayor Sullivan requested to close the floor.
Mr. Sullivan motioned to close the nominations, seconded by Ms. Sullivan.
Voted: to approve the motion, unanimous.
Mayor Sullivan took a roll call vote:

Mayor Sullivan congratulated Ms. Ehlers on her election of position of Vice-Chair. Ms. Ehlers thanked School Committee members and pledged her support to this committee and the students.
Mayor Sullivan took a two-minute recess at 7:30 p.m.
Mayor Sullivan called the Brockton School Committee back into order at 7:32 p.m.
Presentation of Plaque to Outgoing Vice Chair
Ms. Asack was presented with a plaque in recognition of her service as the 2022 Vice-Chair
of the School Committee. Superintendent Thomas mentioned that Ms. Asack has served as
Vice- Chair of the school committee for one year and thanked her for her dedication. Mayor Sullivan
also echoed the sentiments of Superintendent Thomas and thanked Ms. Asack for her professionalism and dedication during the 2022 year and looks forward to working with her. School Committee members also thanked Ms. Asack for her dedication. (applause)
Ms. Asack thanked the members of the committee for their kind words.
Consent Agenda Mayor Sullivan explained the purpose of the Consent Agenda, read the items aloud and asked members for any requests to remove items for further discussion. No items were removed for discussion.
Mr. Sullivan made a motion to approve the Consent Agenda, seconded by Ms. Sullivan.
Voted: to adopt the recommendation, unanimously.

Report Superintendent Thomas mentioned there is no report this evening.

to Subcommittee
New Business Mayor Sullivan asked the committee to postpone the Appointment of 2023 Subcommittees to the next scheduled school committee meeting. He is requesting time to coordinate with the newly elected Vice-Chair on assignments.
Mr. Homer motioned to postpone the Appointments of 2023 Subcommittees to the next School Committee meeting. Seconded by Mr. Sullivan.
Voted: to postpone the recommendation, unanimously.
