Families Experiencing Homelessness

Families should know that their children are entitled to an education even if they are experiencing homelessness.

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act provides students with educational stability to ensure that they are able to continue their education.

If you live in any of the following situations:
  • Doubled up with other people
  • Homeless shelters
  • Hotel/motel or campground
  • Car, park, empty building, bus or train station

Then your eligible children have the right to:

✔ Receive a free, appropriate public education
✔  Enroll in school immediately, even if they lack the documents normally required for enrollment
✔ Enroll in school and attend classes while the school gathers needed documents
✔ Enroll in a local school or continue attending their original school
✔ Receive transportation to and from the school of origin, if requested
✔ Receive educational services comparable to those provided to other students, according to the student's needs

If You Believe Your Children May Be Eligible

Please contact the district's McKinney-Vento liaison listed on the righthand side of this page to find out what services and supports may be available. There may also be supports available for preschool-age children.

If BPS believes the school you've selected is not in the best interest of your children, the district may provide you with a written explanation of its position and inform you of your right to appeal its decision.
