Preparing for Our Return to the Classroom on Monday

Dear BPS Families,

As you know, over the last several days the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has reported a record number of COVID-19 cases. My team is devoting the weekend to assessing how this latest surge in cases could impact our ability to staff our buildings as well as the impact it may have on our transportation system. Unfortunately, like most districts across the state right now we need to prepare for the possibility that some schools may need to temporarily close due to under-staffing.

Please be prepared for the possibility that your child’s school could be temporarily closed and have a plan in place for childcare. If your child takes a bus, please also prepare for the possibility that their bus could experience significant delays this week or that you may need to drive them to school.

As of this writing, all Brockton Public Schools will open on time Monday. If that changes, we will notify you by all call, text message and post the information on our website and social media platforms. The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has stated that it will not be closing schools this upcoming week and we therefore must make decisions on a school-by-school basis when necessary.

All of our existing safety protocols will remain in place when your child returns to school. That includes mask wearing, frequent handwashing and sanitizing. We encourage every BPS parent/guardian to register their children for the district’s routine COVID-19 safety checks. You may do so by clicking here.

It is critically important that anyone exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 remains home and gets tested. If you had your child tested for COVID-19 and are awaiting their test results, do not send them to school until and unless their results come back negative. We need every member of our community to work together to keep COVID-19 out of our schools.

I want to thank you in advance for your patience as we make necessary adjustments over the weekend.

Sincerely,

Superintendent Thomas
