BPS Hires Renee Heywood as First-Ever Executive Director of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

Dear BPS Families,

I am thrilled to share that Renee Heywood will be joining the Brockton Public Schools as Executive Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Renee’s first day will be Tuesday, June 1.

Renee joins BPS from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Youth Services where she served as Director of Educational Services since 2018 and as Regional Education Coordinator for eight years. She possesses extensive experience working with educators, students and families to facilitate culturally responsive practices and to provide a fair and equitable education to all.

Renee has lived in Brockton for nearly 30 years and her children attended Brockton Public Schools. She served as Parent Advisory Council President at West Middle School from 2007 to 2008.

We had many highly qualified and exceptional candidates apply for this position, including many who live right here in Brockton. I appreciated their patience and dedication as we completed three rounds of interviews with questions from district administrators, School Committee members, community leaders and BPS students. I’d especially like to thank our students and community leaders who represented the collective voice of our city with pride. It is my hope that the time and consideration put into this process demonstrates how important this newly created position will be to defining a path forward for our district.

We will provide opportunities for families to get to know Renee as she gets started. In the meantime, please join me in welcoming Renee to BPS.

Thank you,

Superintendent Thomas
