A Letter from Superintendent Thomas Regarding Harmful Behavior on Social Media

Dear BPS Parents/Guardians,

I am writing to you today to ask for your help in keeping the vandalism and physical assault that is being actively encouraged on social media out of our schools. Please talk to your children about what they are witnessing on social media and help them to understand that the people who invent these harmful trends do not care about their safety or well-being. The people who invented “devious lick” do not care whatsoever if our kids get in trouble for their actions.

This is a very serious matter. The last thing we want is for any of our students to get injured because they are engaging in unsafe behavior. We’ve been spared the major issues seen in other districts nationwide, but we need our kids to continue to exhibit the maturity and self-confidence to avoid going with the crowd on this.

The latest trend reportedly being encouraged on social media nationally is to hit a staff member. I want to be very clear that in accordance with our student handbook anyone who physically assaults a staff member or fellow student will face disciplinary action which may include suspension or expulsion.

Thank you in advance for talking to your children.

Sincerely,

Superintendent Thomas
