A Letter to the BHS Community Following an Incident at Away Football Game

Dear BHS Community,

As I’m sure many of you have heard, students in our Marching Band and our half-time performers were subjected to racist and homophobic remarks as well as sexual harassment during a football game at Xaverian Brothers High School Friday night. I am closely monitoring the investigation by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association and the administrators at Xaverian Brothers High School. I expect those responsible for this abhorrent display of hate to be held accountable for their actions.

To the students who were targeted, please know that you are worthy of so much more respect than you received Friday. I am deeply sorry for what you experienced and will do everything I can to prevent it from happening again. I’d like to thank you for coming forward with what you experienced. Advocating for yourself and your peers is always the right thing to do and I am proud of how you handled a completely unacceptable situation.

It is important to me that every student reading this understands something. When another person sends hate your way, when they speak down to you, or when they weaponize what they perceive to be a difference between you and them, it says everything about their character and nothing about yours.

I will provide an update on the investigation as soon as I have more information.

Thank you,

Principal Burns
