Annual Inclement Weather Notice from BPS

Annual Inclement Weather Notice from BPS

Dear BPS Families,

Each fall, the district reminds the community of its procedures for delaying and/or canceling school in the event of inclement weather.

The safety of our staff and students and their ability to travel to and from school on our city’s streets and walkways is always our top priority. When inclement weather is predicted, our team at the Brockton Public Schools closely monitors the forecast in partnership with the city and our transportation providers to determine if we must amend the school day. We consider many different factors, including timing of the storm, the amount of snowfall and the risk for downed trees and power outages.

If we must delay or cancel school, the district will notify the BPS community via each of the following platforms:

-          The district’s phone and text message systems.

-          The district’s website, bpsma.org.

-          The district’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

-          All of the local broadcast TV channels.

If conditions deteriorate during the school day, we may elect to dismiss school early in order to keep our students and staff off the roads during the peak of the storm. Weather-related early dismissal announcements are made via direct phone calls and text messages and are posted on bpsma.org.

If a storm moves out of our region in the early morning hours, we may elect to delay the start of school to give crews the requisite time to clear roads and walkways near our buildings. Depending on the timing of the storm, we may delay for either one hour or two hours. If we need to delay school on an early dismissal day, we would cancel the early dismissal and keep the students in school until their regular dismissal time. A list of delayed opening times by grade level is available here.

In the past, we’ve unfortunately experienced instances of incorrect information being spread on social media. Please verify any information you read on social media by checking one of the platforms listed above. If you would like to receive school closing information via text message, please opt in to receiving text messages from BPS by texting YES to 675-87.

Thank you,

Superintendent Thomas
