BPS to launch optional pool testing program for students

Dear BPS Parents,

The Brockton Public Schools is launching a program to offer free COVID-19 testing to students whose parents/guardians would like them to participate. The district chose to partner with the state on this program to provide an added layer of safety as we work together to keep COVID-19 out of our schools.

Your child’s participation is entirely optional. Should they participate, they would complete what is known as a “shallow” nasal swab once per week. Their nasal swab would be submitted for testing along with nasal swabs from other participating students in their class- this is known as “pool testing”. In the event that one of the swabs in the “pool” comes back positive, all students in that group would be retested. You would then be notified about the results of any individual diagnostic follow-up test.

If you would like your child to participate in this program, please complete this consent form no later than Friday, April 23. After April 23, it will take up to one week to process consent forms.

We want to stress that this program is for asymptomatic students. Any student exhibiting one or more symptoms of COVID-19 must stay home and their parent/guardian should seek testing from their primary care provider or visit one of the state’s Stop the Spread sites.

Please contact Michael McKenna via email at MICHAELCMCKENNA@bpsma.org or by phone at 774-273-3868 if you have any questions or would like more information.

Thank you,

Dr. Linda Cahill

Supervisor of Nurses
