Safety Update for BHS Community November 12, 2021

Dear Brockton High Families,

Late last night a member of our school community sent us a screen grab of a threatening post that was circulating among our students on Snapchat. The post included an image of a gun and referenced “BHS”. We've determined that the photo was posted on the Internet as far back as 2014.

While we are taking the post very seriously, we do not know at this time if the image was posted by a Brockton student and we recognize that “BHS” is a very common school acronym nationwide. After consulting law enforcement, we are following our training and feel the nature of the post does not warrant the closure of school today.

Out of an abundance of caution, we will be conducting our morning safety checks for all students and there will be an additional police presence at the school today. If you would prefer to keep your child home today, please contact their dean’s office so that we can ensure their absence is waived.

The investigation is ongoing. If the post is traced back to a Brockton Public Schools student, that individual will be criminally charged and face a disciplinary hearing at their school. Having said that, I want to remind you that we have seen multiple instances this year in which posts have used general language and been circulated nationwide in an effort to cause fear and concern among as many young people as possible.

I am first and foremost committed to keeping your children safe at school. I will continue to consult with our partners in law enforcement as issues of this nature come up and respond in a way that balances public safety with your child’s educational needs.

Thank you,

Principal Burns
