Updated Safety Measures at BHS

Updated Safety Measures at BHS

Dear Boxer Families,

Over the weekend, our administrative team worked in collaboration with Superintendent Thomas and School Police to devise an updated safety plan for our students and staff. It is as follows:

-          Students will enter the school through their designated building where they will pass through a walk-through metal detector. Any items in violation of the student handbook will be confiscated in accordance with the procedures outlined in the handbook.

-          Until further notice, only bags the size of your BPS laptop or smaller will be permitted inside the building. This includes bags such as clutches or wristlets and belt bags or fanny packs. Larger bags, including backpacks and duffel bags, are not permitted. All bags are subject to a search at the entrances.

-          Students who need to bring larger bags to school for sports will be required to drop their bags off in the main lobby of the gymnasium where a staff member will store them for the day. Please make sure your bag is labeled with your name on it prior to drop-off.

-          Students who need to bring a musical instrument that is larger than a flute or piccolo to school will be required to drop it off at the Fine Arts Building before school where it will be stored for the day.

-          Students should have any metal items, such as jewelry, visible prior to passing through the metal detector so that we can speed up the process.

-          All visitors and guests will be required to pass through a metal detector at the main entrance of the administration building.

Rain is in the forecast this week so we recommend that students wear weather-appropriate attire to school. We will do our best to get everyone into the building as quickly as possible.

It pains me that these new measures are necessary, however after consulting staff, students and families we feel that this is what is needed to make our community feel safe. Right now, we need every good idea to be brought to the table. I look forward to hearing from our parents and guardians later this week at a meeting I am planning. Please expect a follow-up message from me Monday afternoon with meeting details. In the meantime, please email me at cynthiaeburns@bpsma.org or call the main office tomorrow morning.

Thank you,

Principal Burns
