Social Emotional Learning Self Screening

Brockton Public Schools are dedicated to fostering the social, emotional, and academic growth of every student. To better support our students, we are implementing a universal screener in Fall 2024 called The SSIS Brief + Mental Health Scales. This tool will help us understand students' feelings about themselves, their environment, and their community.

What is The SSIS Brief + Mental Health Scales?

Purpose: This assessment helps us identify students’ strengths and areas where they might need additional support.

Focus Areas: The scales cover various aspects of SEL including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. They also address internalizing and externalizing emotional behavioral concerns.

Duration: The assessment consists of 30 questions and takes approximately 8-10 minutes to complete.

Why is This Important?

Informed Support: By understanding students’ social and emotional needs, we can plan more effectively to provide tailored instructional and programmatic support.

Holistic Approach: This helps us ensure that every student receives the support they need to thrive both academically and personally.

Participation Details

Who: All students in grades 3-12.

When: During the week of October 7-11, 2024

How: The assessment will be conducted online during the school day with hands-on support from teachers. The assessment is available in English and Spanish, and BPS community liaisons will provide support directly to students who do not speak or read these languages to ensure they are able to participate.

We appreciate your support for your child(ren)s participation in this important initiative. Your feedback and cooperation are vital to helping us create a supportive and nurturing environment for all students.

If you have any questions or concerns, or would like to view the screener before your student completes it, please feel free to contact Director of Social Emotional Learning John Snelgrove via email by clicking here.

Is this Mandatory?

The assessment is not mandatory, but it's highly recommended that students participate so that their holistic education needs may be better met. If you feel strongly that your child should not participate in the screener, and would like to opt-out, please contact your child’s principal or complete the opt-out form by clicking here.
