DOWNEY SCHOOL MISSION

The mission of the Downey School is to provide a supportive environment where students can maximize their potential in English, Reading and Math while also emphasizing the importance of free thinking, responsibility, diversity and respect for all. Our staff is committed to the creation of a stimulating climate which motivates students to become self-initiating and discriminating in making decisions regarding learning.

DOWNEY SCHOOL VISION

Students at the Downey School will be proficient in Reading and Mathematics at the end of Grade 5, as measured using multiple assessments, including but not limited to the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System.

The Downey School Offers ...

A diverse population made up of regular education and Special Education students.
Updated technology including SmartBoards, Elmos, Renaissance Responders and three computer labs.
An ambitious Walk to Read program that helps all students become successful early readers.
After-school program focusing on academic, enrichment and family involvement activities, and an Extended Day program.

The staff, your Parent Teacher Association, and I welcome you and your child to the Downey Community School. It is our expectation that your child's time with us will be both enjoyable and educationally fulfilling.

This web page has been designed to give you some ideas about Downey School. However, it cannot begin to tell the story of a school that is expansive in size and alive with the activity of hundreds of children and adults. School Improvement Plan

Downey 2012-2014 School Improvement Plan

Every Brockton Public School has an individual School Improvement Plan, a two‐year strategic plan for schools to follow to achieve academic and non-academic goals. The plans are developed among school leadership, faculty and staff and serve as a blueprint for success.

School Improvement plans require school personnel to set challenging goals for student performance, and must articulate the strategies the school staff will use to reach their targets.

In addition to approving each school’s SIP, Central Office conducts three to four “Walk Throughs” per school per year to gather data and provide feedback to site-level leaders about how effectively the plans are being implemented. What’s exciting about this is that everyone recognizes the importance of this kind of feedback and is actively supporting this kind of valuable work – principals, teachers, administrators and union officials.

You have the right to request the following information about the qualifications of your child’s classroom teachers:

Whether your child’s teacher is licensed in the grade levels and subject areas they teach,
Whether your child’s teacher is teaching under an emergency license or waiver,
The college degree and major of your child’s teacher, and
Whether your child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications.
