Automation (CAD/CAM), Computer Science and Information Technology

Students who enroll in the high school’s challenging Automation, Computer Science, and Information Technology courses will acquire valuable technical skills through the use of real-world programs and applications. Final exam scores may grant students college credits at participating schools and allow them to obtain industry credentials.

These courses will be of particular interest to future Information Technology directors, architects, programmers, and multimedia artists. Careers in these fields are expected to increase exponentially in the years ahead. Students will have the opportunity to receive AutoCAD, 3-D Modeling, CISCO Essentials, and A+ Software/Hardware certifications.

Business and Consumer Education

Students who choose to enroll in Business and Consumer Education courses will acquire entrepreneurial, financial, promotional, and managerial skills that are transferable to virtually any industry. Students will also acquire valuable financial literacy skills that will enable them to make informed decisions about their personal finances.

As you’ll see from the list of courses below, a strong background in business can take you anywhere. Those seeking a future trading on Wall Street will benefit from taking our finance courses. Students interested in banking can receive hands-on training via a banking internship with our partners at HarborOne Bank. Future Certified Public Accountants will get their first exposure to the industry in our Accounting courses and will even have the opportunity to pursue a Tax Preparer Certification through Massasoit Community College. Students who aspire to one day open their own businesses will gain a better understanding of consumer behavior in our marketing courses. The next generation of CEOs and business leaders will feel at home in our management courses.

Office Technologies

Office Technologies courses will equip students with a variety of foundational skills that are critical to success in the modern workplace. Students will learn how to efficiently use Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Access and Office 365, to complete assignments. Students will be prepared to obtain the Microsoft Office Specialist certification in Word and/or Excel. Students may take 21st Century Computer Applications, Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Word, and Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Excel.

Communication Design

With every business increasingly relying on digital platforms like TikTok and Instagram to connect with consumers, professionals with a background in Communication Design are in high demand.

Brockton High School offers courses in graphic design and web design. Students who turn to artistry for a creative outlet will have the opportunity to take their skills to the next level in our Digital Publishing courses. Those who are fascinated with the way a series of codes is transformed into a beautiful, functional website will turn their fascination into action in our Web Design courses. Students in the Communications Design program will utilize the Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Publisher- the gold-standard programs used by industry professionals.

Engineering Technologies Pathway

Brockton High School offers a roster of Engineering courses that is as diverse as the field itself. Engineering Technologies courses are aimed at strengthening students’ math, technical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills for eventual real-world application in a wide variety of industries.

Students will apply mathematical concepts and engineering principles to solve real-life, day-to-day problems individually and as a team. The high school offers courses in electronic technology, electrical engineering, and automobile care for students seeking hands-on experiences in those fields. We are also proudly one of the only schools in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to offer courses designed to expose students to the Aviation industry.

Students who pursue the Engineering Technologies Pathway will have the opportunity to become certified in MACWIC Engineering Manufacturing Level I.

Healthcare Pathways

Healthcare is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States and is our region’s largest employment sector. It is therefore no surprise that our Healthcare Pathways offerings are among the most popular courses that we offer.

The high school’s Health Assisting courses provide students with a foundational understanding of health and medical careers, clinical terms, and body systems. Students who take Health Assisting courses will be prepared to take the Home Health Aide test with CPR & First Aid, as well as the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Certification exam for Nursing Assistants in pursuit of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certificate.

The Innovation Pathways: Healthcare (IPHC) Program was launched in September 2019 after the district received an official designation from the Baker-Polito Administration. Through the program, participating students will be able to take free college-level healthcare courses through Massasoit Community College, Bay State College and Bridgewater State University.

Hospitality and Restaurant Food Production

Students in Hospitality and Restaurant Food Production courses will learn both culinary essentials and basic food service management with the goal of becoming skilled managers. These courses are a good fit for students with a strong interest in cooking or who dream of one day operating their own restaurant.

Students who enroll in Hospitality and Restaurant Food Production courses will be a part of the National Restaurant Association ProStart Program and have the opportunity to gain a ProStart Certification. Students in Hospitality and Restaurant Food Production II will complete a 400-hour paid internship in the hospitality industry.

Through Hospitality and Restaurant Food Production I and II students also operate the BHS Fine Arts Café, which is a school-run restaurant that serves Brockton Public Schools’ staff on a weekly basis.

Freshman Exploratory

Much like entering college without a major, Freshman Exploratory exposes students to all three vocational programs so that they can choose the program that is the best possible fit for their interests and skill set. Students will receive instruction in Automotive Technology, Construction Technology, Culiary Arts, and Graphic Communications in three, 30-day rotations. During that time, they will be assigned projects that will help them learn more about their interests, personalities, skills, and values as they relate to potential careers.

Upon completing Freshman Exploratory, students will have the opportunity to choose which industry they’d like to study for their remaining three years of high school.

College and Career Education

In conjunction with their chosen vocational program, students will acquire valuable career literacy skills through the College and Career Education course. In this course, students will take a battery of tests including interest, personality, skills, and values inventories to explore careers that match their profiles. They will generate academic, personal, and career goals and evaluate them as they move through high school. Additionally, students will learn how to find jobs, create a resume and cover letter, have a successful interview, and complete applications. Students will be trained in OSHA-10 to obtain certification.

Automotive Technology

With more than 30 computers on board, modern-day cars are complex systems that require regular maintenance from knowledgeable professionals. Students in the Automotive Technology program will receive hands-on training in maintaining and repairing the five different components of a vehicle, which include engine mechanical, suspension, brakes, electrical, and engine performance. The goal of this program is to prepare students to join the workforce as entry-level automotive technicians.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be encouraged to pursue an Automotive Technology Certificate or higher education. Students with a passing grade of B or better will have the opportunity to receive credit at partnering post-secondary institutions.

Construction Technology

Imagine one day driving by a home that you helped build. The construction trades are an excellent career path for students who enjoy working with their hands and who take pride in seeing a project through from start to finish.

Students in the Construction Technology program will acquire the vocational skills necessary for a successful career in the woodworking industry. In this program, students will use hand tools, small power tools, and power woodworking equipment. Students will receive hands-on experience by undertaking individual and group community projects.

Graphic Communications

Imagine a world without billboards, movie trailers, cartoons, magazines, and logos. Graphic Communications professionals bring vibrance and entertainment to our world and they are needed across nearly every industry.

Students in the Graphic Communications program will acquire the skills necessary to pursuing a successful career in the graphics and publishing field. Areas of study include desktop publishing using the latest creative software, plate making and bindery operations. While emphasis is placed on equipping students with foundational technical skills, creative exploration is encouraged throughout the program.

Culinary Arts students will learn both culinary essentials and basic food service management with the goal of becoming skilled managers. These courses are a good fit for students with a strong interest in cooking or who dream of one day operating their own restaurant.

SOAR Program

In addition to being eligible to apply for the high school’s vocational programs, incoming grade 9 students may also apply to the SOAR Program. In the SOAR Program, students take a full schedule of academic courses at BHS during the day and then take vocational courses at Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School in the afternoon or evening. Current SOAR offerings include  Automotive Technology, Computer and Electronic Engineering, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Dental Assisting, Early Childhood Education, Marketing and Entrepreneurship, Medical Assisting and Precision Machining.
