A 1987 graduate of Brockton High School, Superintendent Thomas grew up on Empire Avenue in the city’s East Side and began his career in 1993 as a physical education teacher at East Middle School. He was also an original staff member of the Boys and Girls Club of Brockton when it first opened its doors in 1991 and started the first summer basketball league at the club in 1992.

Superintendent Thomas oversaw the Phys Ed Department at Brockton High before becoming an assistant housemaster and housemaster at the school. While at Brockton High School, Thomas was part of the committee of teachers and school leaders that collaborated on the famed educational turnaround under the leadership of former Principal Dr. Susan Szachowicz.

Superintendent Thomas became a district administrator in 2010 and served as interim BHS principal and the executive director of operations from January to June 2013. He was tapped as deputy superintendent by Superintendent Kathleen Smith in 2013.

In July 2019, Thomas was chosen to lead the district on an interim basis upon Superintendent Smith’s retirement. The School Committee offered him the full-time role following a unanimous vote in November 2019.

Michael Thomas holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Bridgewater State College (currently Bridgewater State University).
