The Office of Student Support Services oversees a number of important programs that are integral to the operation of the Brockton Public Schools. Guidance Services, the Attendance Office and the Special Education and Health Services Departments operate under the umbrella of the Student Support Services Office. In addition, the district’s alternative schools – Huntington Alternative School, Frederick Douglass Academy, Champion and the Pathways programs – are a key component of the Office of Student Support Services’ efforts to provide a range of educational opportunities to serve the needs of all students.

Sharon Wolder serves as the Brockton Public Schools Equity Officer and as the Civil Rights and Harassment Officer.

Civil Rights and Harassment

Under federal and state law, all students have the right to an education that is free from discrimination. All school programs and activities are open to students without regard to race, color, sex, religion, national origin, disability or sexual orientation. All school procedures and policies are applied in such a way that students are treated equally and fairly.

It is the policy of the Brockton Public Schools to promote and maintain an educational environment that is free from harassment. Harassment is against the law and will not be tolerated in the Brockton Public Schools. Harassment is defined as repeated unwanted or unwelcome verbalisms or behaviors with overtones related to a person's race, color, sex, religion, national origin, disability or sexual orientation.

The Brockton School Committee has designated Sharon Wolder, Chief Officer for Student Support Services, as the school system's equity officer for students, vested with the authority and responsibility of processing all complaints of harassment and discrimination. Any student who feels that he or she has been harassed or discriminated against because of his or her race, color, sex, religion or national origin should contact Sharon Wolder. Ms. Wolder’s office is located in the Crosby Administration Building at 43 Crescent Street, Brockton, MA 02301-4311, (508) 894-4341. If the student prefers, he or she may file the complaint with any teacher or counselor, who will then bring the complaint to the attention of the Equity Officer.

If parents are not satisfied with the results of the investigation and the action taken, a formal complaint may be filed with the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights, 33 Arch Street, Suite 900, Boston, MA 02110-1491, (617) 289-0111.

Equity Officer

The Brockton School Committee has designated Sharon Wolder as the school system’s equity officer for students, vested with the authority and responsibility of processing all complaints of discrimination brought under the provisions of the statutes listed below. Ms. Wolder has also been designated as the district’s Section 504 Coordinator and the Sexual Harassment Officer. Any student who feels that he or she has been harassed or discriminated against because of his or her race, color, national origin, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation or disability should contact Sharon Wolder whose office is located in the Crosby Administration Building at 43 Crescent Street, Brockton, MA 02301-4311, (508) 894-4341. If the student prefers, he or she may file the complaint with any teacher or counselor, who will then bring the complaint to the attention of the Equity Officer.
