The School Committee is the governing board of the city's public school district. Although it functions as a duly elected Committee of city government, the School Committee has, unlike other city boards, autonomous and absolute authority within limitations established by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to carry out the educational policies of the state and guide the educational process.

Section 31: The school committee shall consist of the mayor, who shall be the chairman, and seven (7) members, one of whom shall be elected by and from the voters of each ward of said city. At the first regular municipal election held in said city after the adoption of this act, one member of the school committee shall be elected from each ward for a term of two (2) years from the first Wednesday in January following said election and until his successor is elected and qualified. On said first Wednesday in January the terms of office of the members of the school committee elected under the provisions of said section thirty-one shall terminate.

Editor’s note—The above section reflects the language of Acts 1971, c.696, a special act applicable to Brockton which was approved by the electorate at the city’s 1973 general election.
