The science program for grades kindergarten through grade 8 in the Brockton Public Schools employs a combination of science content and scientific process. Our curriculum is aligned with the Massachusetts State Frameworks, and emphasizes the use of best practices as outlined by the National Science Teachers' association (NSTA). The highlight of the K - 8 science experience is the BPS Middle School Science Fair that is held each year in April. Grade 8 students and selected grade 7 students complete an independently designed science experiment and present their result to their school. Exemplary projects advance to the district science fair and winners from this level advance to the Southeast Region Middle School Science Fair and finally to the Massachusetts Middle School Science Fair.
The BHS Science Department is proud to serve all of the students of the High School, presenting them with a broad range of options in Science Education. Our students are able to develop a firm foundation in the basic principles of both Physical and Life Sciences. It is our hope that this foundation will serve our students well as they enter an adult world, society, and economy which is increasingly dependent on Science and Technology.
Virtually all BHS students will rise to the challenge of the first high stakes MCAS exam after their first three semesters of High School Science. Our Environmental Earth Science, Biology, Advanced Biology, and Advanced Chemistry teachers have committed to maximizing our students’ chances for successfully passing this key educational milestone. In addition to the previously mentioned courses, we offer Astronomy, Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Earth and Space Science, Oceanography, Plant Growth and Animal Care, and Modern Science; almost all of these are offered at two or more academic levels. College level Advanced Placement courses are offered in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Laboratory experiences are promoted in all of our courses so that BHS students can apply their new knowledge to the real world.
