STUDENTS RECEIVING SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES OUTSIDE THEIR REGULAR EDUCATION CLASS - IHB-R

Whenever a student is removed from a regular education class in order to receive special education services, the Brockton Public Schools requires the following:

  1. At the annual or other IEP meeting(s), the Team will include in the IEP a statement that a special education specialist and the regular classroom teacher will determine which regular education class a student can miss with the least detrimental effect on the student.
  2. Within the first two (2) weeks of school, the special education specialist and regular classroom teacher will make the determination of regular education classes to be missed by students receiving special education services.
  3. Parents will be informed of the decision and given an opportunity to appeal the determination prior to implementation.
  4. Documentation of decisions regarding scheduling of regular and special education classes will be placed in the student’s file.

The following is the schoolwork make-up policy for students who miss regular education classes in order to receive special education services:

  1. The school shall provide missed assignments to students who miss regular education classes in order to receive special education.
  2. The school shall provide such students with the opportunity for assistance from the regular classroom teacher if the teacher determines assistance is needed and/or the student/parent requests such assistance. If the student is having difficulty in the regular classroom subject missed, the regular classroom teacher and the specialist will consult to determine if the schedule should be modified so that such student is pulled out of a different regular education class.

If at any time the School Committee desires to modify any portion of this agreement because of changed conditions making performance impossible or impractical or because of any other reason, it shall promptly notify OCR in writing setting forth the facts and circumstance thought to justify modification and the substance of the proposed modification, the proposed modification shall not take effect.
