School Committee Policy


RECONSIDERATION OF LIBRARY MATERIALS - IIAE-R

  1. The suitability of particular books or other materials may be questioned. All criticism or requests for reconsideration shall be presented to the Coordinator of Library and Media Services in writing on the “Citizen’s Request Form for Reevaluation of Materials.”
  2. Library Review Committee - Level One

    1. If the material questioned is at the elementary or junior high level, then a Library Review Committee comprised of all elementary and junior high librarians shall review it.
    2. If the material questioned is at the senior high level, then a Library Review Committee comprised of all high school librarians and media specialists shall review it.
    3. After each member of the Library Review Committee has read the questioned material in its entirety, the Coordinator will call a meeting of the committee to vote by a written signed ballot.
    4. A three-fourth-majority vote shall be required to decide whether or not to retain the questioned material in the collection at that level.
    5. If the vote is in favor of removing the material from the collection, the librarians will send all their copies to the Director immediately.
    6. The Director of the Library Review Committee decision will notify the Superintendent of Schools and the complainant. If the complainant is dissatisfied with this decision, and so requests, the complaint will be forwarded to the Level Two Committee.
  3. Library Review Committee-Level Two

    This committee shall be composed of the following members who shall serve for not less than one school year.

    1. Elementary:

      1. Senior Director of Curriculum
      2. Coordinator of Library and Media Services
      3. Building principal concerned
      4. Elementary school librarian
      5. Elementary classroom teacher
      6. Two members of the community
    2. Junior High:

      1. Senior Director of Curriculum
      2. Coordinator of Library and Media Services
      3. Building principal concerned
      4. Junior high librarian
      5. Junior high classroom teacher
      6. Responsible eighth grade student based on judgment of building principal
      7. Two members of the community
    3. Brockton High:

      1. Senior Director of Curriculum
      2. Coordinator of Library and Media Services
      3. Housemaster
      4. High school librarian
      5. High school classroom teacher
      6. Responsible senior student
      7. Two members of the community

    The Level Two Review Committee shall function at the call of the Coordinator of Library and Media Services upon receipt of a complaint. The report of this committee shall be completed as soon as possible and submitted to the Coordinator who will in turn submit it to the Superintendent of Schools.

    The Superintendent may elect to accept the recommendation of the Level Two Review Committee or he/she may forward the report of this committee with his/her own recommendation to the School Committee for final disposition.

    No material shall be removed from use at Level Two until the Coordinator is notified of the final decision of the Superintendent and/or the School Committee.
