What opportunities are available to help my child and family get ready for kindergarten?

We offer a variety of kindergarten transition activities and events throughout the year to support families as they prepare for their child’s start to school. These opportunities are designed to provide helpful information, connections to local resources, and guidance to make the transition to kindergarten smooth and positive.

These events are also a great way for children to begin building comfort with school routines while families connect with community supports.

We partner with community organizations, including CFCE and the Brockton Public Library, to offer free events for families with young children. These events support early learning, social development, and school readiness.

What is the Kindergarten registration process?

When Do I Register?

Registration opens February 22.
All registrations must be completed with required documentation by May 22 to be eligible for the Dual Language Lottery and sibling preference.

What do I need to Register?

· Child’s birth certificate or passport

· Child’s photo (from the shoulders up)

· Parent/Guardian’s valid photo I.D.

· Proof of Brockton residency

· Recent Physical Exam (dated within 12 months)

· Proof of lead and vision screening

· Required Immunizations: DTaP (5) | Polio (4) | Hep B (3) | MMR (2) | Varicella (2)

How do I prove residency?

To establish Brockton residency, you need to submit two of the following documents:

· Utility bill dated within the last 60 days (gas, oil, electric, phone, cable, or water)

· Mortgage, lease agreement, rental contract, or notarized BPS affidavit

· A letter from an approved government agency (i.e., DTA, DCF, DOR)

Your name and Brockton address must be clearly visible on all documents.

Step 3. Complete the application

After submitting your application form you will receive a confirmation email. Your application will temporarily be placed on hold for review. A registration specialist will then contact you to review your application and guide you through the process. Be sure to make note of your registration number.

How do I submit the required documents?

Submit documents through the Online Registration (OLR) portal, or via text, email, fax, or in person to your assigned registration specialist. After applying, save the confirmation email with your registration number. Your application will be reviewed, and a registration specialist will contact you to discuss next steps.

What happens after I submit my kindergarten application?

As part of the registration process, all families will be contacted by an ESL teacher to complete the Home Language Survey (HLS).

If a language other than English is identified:

• Your child will be scheduled for an in-person language screening

• Families must attend the appointment for the screening to be completed

Important reminders:

• Students are not assigned until all required documentation is received, including the language screening (if applicable)

• All kindergarten assignments are uploaded to the Parent Portal in July.

• Parents must create and activate their Parent Portal account, as assignments will not be mailed.

What programs are offered for Pre-Schoolers?

Pre-K Peer Registration - Limited Seats Remaining!

Brockton Public Schools continues to offer approximately 30 classrooms to better serve eligible preschool students with disabilities. A limited number of remaining seats in these classrooms are available for typically developing children (peer models) to learn alongside students with special needs. Due to high interest, available peer model seats are limited and will be filled as space allows. Families interested in a peer model opportunity are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Applicants may be placed on a waitlist if all remaining seats are filled.

Please note that transportation is not provided for peer models.

Brockton’s early childhood programs, located throughout the district, offer both morning and afternoon sessions for preschool students with disabilities.

Peer models play a vital role in supporting their classmates by demonstrating age-appropriate skills. We are looking for children who meet most or all of the following criteria:

Fully toilet trained
Comfortably separates from parents
Follows rules and routines
Attends to a self-directed activity for 8-10 minutes
Engages in an adult-directed activity for 4-5 minutes
Plays appropriately with a variety of toys
Engages in play alongside or with other children while sharing materials
Speaks in clear sentences and interacts with peers
Understandable speech to unfamiliar adults
Answers simple questions and follows basic instructions
Uses crayons, scissors, and glue to complete projects
Demonstrates coordination in walking, running, jumping, and climbing

Step 1: Go to Gmail

What documentation do I need to register my child for BPS?

WHAT DO I NEED TO REGISTER?

All families registering a new student with the Brockton Public Schools must have the following required documents uploaded into the Online Registration OLR. You can upload documents directly, text, fax or email them to the registration specialist assigned to you. Be sure to make note of the application number.

You will need the following:

Child’s birth certificate, birth abstract or passport
Parent’s/Guardian’s valid photo I.D.
Two documents that prove Brockton residency
Required Immunizations (see Required Immunizations by grade level below)
Proof of lead screening (for Kindergarten)
Proof of vision screening with stereopsis (for Kindergarten)
Recent physical exam (dated within 12 months)
Individualized Education Plan (if child has been identified with special educational needs)

Controlled School Choice

Parents/guardians who are enrolling or have enrolled their children in the Brockton Public Schools will have the opportunity to choose, within established guidelines, the school their children will attend. The school district's elementary and middle schools have been subdivided into 4 geographic attendance zones. Elementary students are assigned to a school in their zone or in the citywide zone which is open to all students if space is available. Middle school students are assigned by the district office; however, transportation is not provided outside of the student's zone of residence.

How are students assigned to a school?

During registration, parents/guardians are asked to select three different schools within their attendance zone, listed in order of preference.

Every effort is made to assign students to one of the in-zone schools selected by the family. Placement is based on seat availability. If a family does not select three different schools, the student will be assigned to the closest in-zone school, as space allows.

When a school or program receives more requests than available seats, assignments are determined using the following considerations:

Timely completion of the registration process
Seat availability
Sibling priority within the same household (including siblings, step-siblings, or foster siblings currently attending the school)
Proximity to the school

Students who are not placed in their first-choice school may be added to a wait list for that school. If a seat becomes available and the family declines the offer, the student will be removed from the wait list. All wait lists are cleared at the end of each school year.

Middle School assignments are completed in accordance with the Brockton School Committee guidelines. The following established set of priorities will be used to decide school assignments:

1. Programmatic need
2. Proximity to school within their zone
3. Sibling preference (brother/sister, step-sibling, foster-sibling who live in the same home also attend chosen school)
4. Seat availability

If you are not pleased with your child's assignment, you will be able to make a one-time appeal following the assignment during the two-week appeal window. Middle School assignments are placed in the Parent Portal by mid-May of each year.

Out-of-Zone Assignment Requests

Students are assigned to schools within their designated school zone. Students who reside within a school’s zone are given priority placement. If you are seeking placement at a school outside of your assigned zone, you must submit an Out-of-Zone (OOZ) Placement Request. Please note that OOZ placements can only be considered after in-zone placements are finalized, and only if space is available. OOZ Request Form

If an Out-of-Zone placement is approved, transportation is the responsibility of the parent or guardian.

Is my child eligible for transportation?

Transportation Guidelines

Transportation is provided to students only within their zone of residence. Massachusetts law requires districts to provide transportation for kindergarten students who live two miles or more from their assigned school. In Brockton, we exceed this requirement and provide transportation for students who live 1.5 miles or more from their assigned school within their zone. Elementary school students are eligible for transportation if they live more than 1.5 miles from their school and the school is in their zone. Middle school students are eligible for transportation if they live more than 2.0 miles from their school and the school is in their zone. Students assigned to a special program at a school outside of their zone of residence will be transported if they live beyond 1.5 miles for elementary students or 2.0 miles for middle school students.

What special programs exist for students in Brockton?

English Language Learners

Students whose primary language is not English and who have been identified as eligible for sheltered English immersion classrooms will be assigned to a school that provides these services.

Special Education Student Assignments

In accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the educational placement of a special education student is determined by the student's individual education planning team and cannot be unilaterally determined by the parents. Therefore, students who have been identified as requiring special education services will be assigned only to those schools containing the special education program required by their Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Integrated Kindergarten Classroom

The integrated and inclusion classroom models bring together children with special needs and typically developing children or role models. Early integration experiences are known to be beneficial to both the special needs child and the typically developing child. Both groups learn from one another and develop a better understanding of each other's strengths and needs. The program uses the same curriculum and materials as the regular kindergarten program. In each integrated kindergarten classroom there will be one special needs teacher and two full time paraprofessionals for a maximum of twenty children. Classes will have up to ten role models and up to ten children with special needs. Parents may apply for the integrated programs during the kindergarten registration process. Typically developing students are screened and selected by the Special Education Department from enrollment requests and by zone address.

What is the DUAL LANGUAGE program and how do I apply?

BPS proudly offers dual language programs where students learn to read, write, and speak in two languages: Unidos- English/Portuguese, Juntos-English/Spanish and Amitié-English/French. All three dual language programs are located at the George Global Studies School. Due to high demand, incoming Kindergarten students are selected through a lottery that was held virtually on May 28, 2025.

All registrations must be completed with required documentation by May 22 to be eligible for the Dual Language Lottery.

Final acceptance will be contingent upon the results of the screening and attending the mandatory family orientation session.
Families will be contacted in the order the names are drawn in the lottery until the class roster is filled.

If you are interested in participating in the Dual Language Lottery (DLL), you must complete the DLL electronic form in the registration.

Entry into the DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM is offered in Kindergarten only, unless the student is transferring from a Dual Language Program (depending on seat availability).

How do I change my address?

Please note the following:

Within the Same School Zone: Students moving to a new address within their current school zone may continue attending their current school. However, proof of the new address must be submitted.
Outside of Zone: Students moving to a new school outside of their school zone may remain at their current school until the end of the school year, though transportation will not be provided. After the school year ends, parents must apply for an out-of-zone placement if they wish to keep their child at the current school. Otherwise, a new school within the updated school zone will need to be selected.

How do I register my child for homeschooling?

The law in Massachusetts mandates that the School Committee must ensure that a homeschooling program adheres to the minimum standards set for public schools in the state before granting approval. To enroll your child in homeschooling, kindly fill out the HOMESCHOOL FORM. This form, along with its accompanying documents, must be submitted at least fourteen (14) days before the intended commencement of the home education program.

Middle school assignments and the appeals process

Middle school assignments for all incoming Grade 6 students are determined based on guidelines set by the School Committee. Assignment letters will be posted in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal by the end of May.

Families who wish to request a change have the opportunity to submit a one-time appeal during the designated appeal window, which will close on June 13. All appeals submitted within that timeframe and supported by a strong rationale, as well as space availability, will be reviewed by a three-member panel.

Please note that the Appeals Board’s decision is final. Appeal decisions will be mailed to families via U.S. Mail.

How do I address concerns about my child’s school experience?

Any concerns regarding academics, social matters, or student safety should be directed to the building principal. As the school leader, the principal is best positioned to assess the situation, determine appropriate interventions, and connect families with the full range of resources available within the school to support the student’s success. Most issues can be effectively resolved through collaboration with the school team, and if further steps are needed, the principal and staff will guide families through the process.

Transfer Requests
School transfers should be considered only as a last resort, after all supports and interventions at the current school have been explored. To ensure thoughtful review and maintain stability for students, the transfer request link will be available for a limited two-week window. During this period, families may submit a request, which will be reviewed in collaboration with school leadership. Availability is extremely limited and not all requests can be approved.
